Tornadoes confirmed near Reading and Osage City; damage assessments planned for Saturday

Damage reports are pending after a tornado touched down in northeastern Lyon County Friday evening.

A tornado was reported by qualified spotters in Lyon County about five miles west-northwest of Reading shortly after 8 p.m. Qualified spotters also reported a tornado four miles south-southeast of Admire, but it is unclear whether both reports involve the same tornado activity.

At least one tornado touched down 8 miles south of Osage City. Details of this report are pending.

The National Weather Service plans to conduct damage surveys Saturday morning.

A cluster of thunderstorms quickly developed along the U.S. Highway 56 corridor north of Emporia after 7 p.m. and gradually moved eastward, prompting several tornado warnings and a number of severe thunderstorm warnings for parts of Lyon, Osage and Franklin counties. More than 250 Evergy customers in Coffey and Osage counties lost power due to the storms.

The storms also brought heavy rainfall east of Emporia, triggering an urban and small stream flood advisory for Coffey and Osage counties until 1:45 a.m. Saturday.

Further storms are possible during both days of the weekend. The chances of overall activity are not great for either day, but on Saturday the severe storm risk is marginal for areas south of US-56.
