Top Vatican diplomat warns against using NATO weapons against Russia

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Piero Parolin expressed concerns about the conflict between Ukraine and Russia during an interview with journalists on the sidelines of a book presentation in Milan this week. He said of the use of NATO weapons against Russia: “I think this should concern anyone who cares about the fate of our world.

“This could lead to an escalation that no one will be able to control, it is a worrying prospect.”

The comments come as NATO considers letting Ukraine target Russian territory with supplied weapons, a move supported by the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany and the United States.

Discussions on this point have intensified in recent days after Russia launched a new offensive in Kharkiv, the latest in its efforts to advance in Ukraine after launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said in early May that Ukraine could use weapons supplied by London on targets in Russia and that it was up to kyiv to decide whether or not to do so.

On Tuesday, during a five-day trip to Germany, French President Emmanuel Macron said: “We should authorize the neutralization of military sites launching missiles and those from which Ukraine is targeted.”

At a joint press conference with Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz supported this position, a view also shared by several Eastern European NATO members.

U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday eased some limits on the use of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, signaling a move toward allowing the use of U.S. weapons on Russian soil .

In response to possible Western military aid to Ukraine, Russia's top security official, Dmitry Medvedev, warned of significant consequences. In a statement, he said: “This is not military assistance, it is participation in a war against us,” adding that such actions could well become a “casus belli,” or an act provoking war.
