Tillamook County Sheriff's Cadet Rescues Stranded Fawn From Starving Coyotes

PORTLAND, OregonKOIN) — A Tillamook County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol cadet rescued a stranded fawn on a steep hillside near a pair of hungry coyotes on June 6.

Navy Deputy Dennis Greiner and Cadet Brodie Cloud found the fawn while recovering a canoe following a fatal boating accident on the Nehalem River.

“As they approached the area of the capsize, they observed two coyotes on an island interested in something on a small bluff on the other side of the river,” the sheriff’s office said. “They realized it was a fawn that had fallen off the edge and was unable to get back up to its mother who was waiting at the top.”

Cloud, who is an avid hunter and accustomed to handling wild animals, the sheriff's office said, climbed the hillside and returned the fawn to its mother on the overhanging cliff.

“While it is not recommended to handle a fawn separated from its mother because she may subsequently reject it, it was determined that this minimal contact was worth the risk,” the TCSO said. “The mother deer took the fawn in and took it away from the area.”
