Ticketmaster owner says user data is for sale

Live Nation appears to be the victim of a cyberattack.

Ticketmaster's owner said that earlier this month it “identified unauthorized activity within a third-party cloud database environment containing company data…and launched an investigation with forensic investigators cutting edge to understand what had happened.

The company says the breach primarily affected its Ticketmaster subsidiary.

To make matters worse, the company says it appears the data is being offered for sale on the dark web.

“On May 27, 2024, a criminal actor offered for sale what he claimed to be Company user data via the dark web,” the company wrote in the SEC filing. “We are working to mitigate risks to our users and society, and have notified and are cooperating with law enforcement. Where applicable, we also notify regulatory authorities and users of any unauthorized access to personal information.

Live Nation says it does not believe the incident will have a material impact on its operations at this time.

The apparent hack caps a difficult month for the live events, concerts and ticketing giant. Last week, the Justice Department filed an antitrust suit against the company, seeking to break it up.

Media and entertainment companies are frequent targets of cyberattacks (Roku said hundreds of thousands of accounts were hacked earlier this year), with credit card information and personal consumer data at their disposal. , and a highly publicized presence.

It's not clear who Live Nation's “criminal threat actors” are, or what they were after, beyond some user data that they could sell on the black market.
