Thriving Pink to host teen awareness event in Davis – Daily Democrat

Local teenager Ainsley DiNunzio said “it was a shock” when she learned her mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Fortunately for the family, DiNunzio's mother's case of breast cancer was mild and the path to recovery was clear. She considers herself lucky that her mother's case wasn't as serious, but she recognizes that many others weren't as lucky. Despite this, DiNunzio said her mother's diagnosis was still incredibly isolating.

Motivated by her own experience, DiNunzio decided to contact local nonprofit Thriving Pink to see what they could do to help, which ultimately led to the next Teen Outreach event.

The July 13 event, aimed at supporting teens whose families have been affected by breast cancer, will provide teens with the opportunity to connect, share stories, give hope, write cards for teenage girls whose mothers have received a more recent diagnosis and to offer advice to others in similar situations.

“I knew I would have benefited from something like this event, because no one really talked about it with me except my mother, and I know that talking to other people who had similar experiences would have helped me ” DiNunzio explained. “The motivation for hosting this event was to make sure other teens don't feel alone when someone they know or love receives a diagnosis.”

In addition to card making, DiNunzio said the event will feature other craft activities, such as possibly creating bracelets or key chains. Refreshments will also be served.

Thriving Pink executive director Leslie Hunter said she simply hopes to create a “positive, welcoming space” for teens to connect with each other.

“Most teenage girls know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, whether it's their mother, aunt, grandmother, teacher or friend, and Ainsley wanted to provide a place where teenage girls can come together knowing that They all know someone who has been affected by this cancer. breast cancer,” Hunter said. “This is our first teen meetup in our Thriving Pink office and I think what’s special is that it’s hosted by a local teen for teens.”

Although the event is aimed specifically at teenagers, Hunter said if they feel comfortable, she is open to hosting children ages 10 to 19. Hunter and one other adult volunteer will be present throughout the gathering.

“I think the main takeaway is that teenagers need to know that no matter what challenges come their way in life, they are never alone,” Hunter emphasized. “There is always support. There is always a friend or wellness professional who can be there for them.

The Teen Outreach event will take place on Saturday, July 13 at the Thriving Pink Office, located at 501 2nd St. in Davis, from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those wishing to participate must RSVP by July 7 by emailing [email protected]. Parents or guardians are also free to contact Hunter at the same email with any questions or concerns.

“It's really important for teens to come together and share their experiences so they can learn how to cope and properly support those around them,” DiNunzio emphasized. “Similar experiences bring people together, and when you're a teenager, it's so easy to feel like everyone has something we don't, whether it's friends, family or security. Teenagers who have a family member or friend with breast cancer need to know that there are people who will support them.

“I hope this event brings together a community of people who will support each other. I hope those who come will be inspired to help those who suffer in silence and reach out a hand. You never know what someone is going through, so be kind.
