Three-vehicle crash results in death – Yavapai County Sheriff's Office

Just before noon Wednesday, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office received a report of a collision with serious injuries on Williamson Valley Road, just north of the intersection with Pioneer Parkway.

Three vehicles were involved – two passenger cars and a cement mixer. One of the cars was stopped northbound at the Pioneer Parkway light in the left lane and continued driving when the light turned green. Another vehicle traveling north attempted to pass the first by moving into the right lane at the end of the lane, which forced the driver into the left lane, causing him to hit the first vehicle. This collision caused the second vehicle to spin into the southbound lane, directly in front of an oncoming cement mixer truck.

The driver of the concrete mixer attempted to avoid the vehicle, but was unable to do so, causing the now badly damaged car to crash into a dirt shoulder and the concrete mixer to hit a guardrail.

The driver of the “overtaking” vehicle that spun and was struck by the mixer was flown to Honor Deer Valley in critical condition. His wife, who was in the front passenger seat, was transported from the scene but sadly died en route to hospital.

YCSO officers arrived on scene to conduct a preliminary investigation, with several witnesses verifying that the driver of the concrete mixer did not have the opportunity to avoid the accident. Impairment does not appear to be a factor in the driver of the “overrun” vehicle or the driver of the cement truck. An interview will be attempted, if possible, later with the driver of the overtaking vehicle.
