Three teens among four killed after drunken driving chase ends in fiery crash

Three of the four suspects killed after a high-speed chase in San Bernardino County ended in a fiery, violent crash have been identified as teenagers, authorities confirmed to KTLA.

The June 28 chase near Foothill Boulevard and Archibald Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga began around 1:45 a.m. when deputies with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department attempted to stop a suspected drunk driver.

Authorities said a pursuit was initiated when the driver of the black 2018 Hyundai failed to yield the right of way and sped off to avoid deputies.

The Ontario Police Service's aviation unit assisted deputies by tracking the suspect vehicle from the air.

About six minutes into the pursuit, the driver of the Hyundai, who was traveling west on I-16,th He drove onto Upland Street and entered the intersection of Mountain Avenue, before colliding with a white 2010 Ford Mustang that was not involved in the pursuit.

“The suspect vehicle then swerved and struck a pole,” a SBSD news release said. “During the collision, the suspect vehicle separated into three pieces and caught fire.”

Footage of the crash captured by Sky5 showed a debris field in and around the intersection, with parts of the Hyundai and Ford strewn across the area.

Four of the five occupants of the Hyundai were killed in the crash.

Three people have been identified: Jesus Guillen Jr., 16, a Fontana resident, Michael Adrian Gomez, 17, a Pomona resident, and Joel Jeremiah Silva, 16, a Fontana resident.

A 13-year-old boy who was also in the Hyundai was rushed to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive, authorities said.

The two victims in the Ford Mustang, a 35-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman, both from Ontario, were taken to hospital as a precaution.

“During the investigation, deputies discovered that the suspect vehicle had been reported stolen out of Fontana and a loaded firearm was recovered from the person of one of the deceased individuals,” the release said.

Authorities said three parallel investigations were underway into the incident.

Detectives from the Rancho Cucamonga SBSD Police Department are investigating the pursuit, while the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office is investigating the exact cause and manner of death of each suspect, as well as the positive identification of the remaining fourth deceased. The Upland Police Department is conducting a collision investigation.
