Three people hospitalized after multi-car crash, fire in Boston's Ted Williams Tunnel – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – Three people were taken to the hospital after a crash caused three cars to catch fire in the Ted Williams Tunnel in Boston Friday afternoon, officials said.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Boston firefighters responded to the fire, which triggered two alarms. SKY7-HD spotted smoke coming from both ends of the tunnel, and photos taken inside the tunnel showed vehicles engulfed in flames. The fire broke out on the ramp from I-93 to the eastbound Massachusetts Pike.

“There was some difficulty accessing the tunnel, but once we were able to access it, we quickly put water on it,” said Boston Deputy Fire Chief James Greene. “One of the vehicles was a hybrid vehicle. These tend to burn longer and hotter.

There were six people total inside the three cars, and all three people taken to the hospital had minor injuries, Greene said.

Some drivers reportedly abandoned their cars and exited the tunnel as black, choking smoke filled the area.

The eastbound high-occupancy vehicle ramp and tunnel access road were closed around 5:45 p.m., according to MassDOT. Both ramps have since been reopened.

A few fire trucks were outside the tunnel on D Street and traffic was backed up on the Massachusetts Pike heading into the city Friday afternoon.

The people inside the tunnel at that time were alarmed by what they saw.

“It explodes. The car is going to explode,” one person can be heard saying on video.

A charred car was seen being towed from the scene Friday evening.

“The vehicle fire caused damage to the ramp area, including damage to some lights, wall tiles and pavement. The premises have been secured, cleaned and are safe for the traveling public. Any damage will be repaired at a later date,” MassDOT said in a statement Friday evening.
