Third man arrested in connection with fatal Denton shooting inside van, police say

Authorities arrested a third person Thursday after a shooting in Denton last month that left one person dead and another injured, police said.

Around midnight on May 25, officers were dispatched to several calls about shots fired at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of West Windsor Drive, according to Denton police.

Officers found two men who had been shot inside a truck, police said.

Investigators believe a man, whose name has not been released by authorities, was in a van parked in the neighborhood when three men “forced” him out of the vehicle under threat of violence. 'a weapon, police said.

One of the men, identified by police as River Williams, 25, got into the passenger side of the truck.

The person who was forced out of the vehicle got back into his truck and tried to flee with Williams, who still had a gun inside, police said.

During a “struggle” for the weapon, Williams was fatally shot, police said. The driver was also shot, but his injuries were not life-threatening, according to police.

Authorities identified the two other people who were with Williams at the time as Riley Clowers, 24, and Zachary Lowe, 34, police said. Clowers was arrested May 25 and Lowe was arrested Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting.

In a news release issued Thursday, Denton police said investigators believe another person, Daniel Butureza, 31, of Newark, “contributed to the aggravated assault by preventing the van from escaping.” . He was arrested Thursday in Haslet.

“Because Williams died during the commission of an aggravated assault, murder warrants were obtained for Butureza, Lowe and Clowers,” Denton police said in the news release.

Lowe's bail was set at $250,000 and Clowers' bail was set at $100,000, according to online records. Both men were in the Denton County Jail.

Butureza's bail had not been set as of Thursday evening, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the shooting.
