The suspect accused of Stapleton's bloody murder is arraigned Tuesday in criminal court.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A man accused of stabbing another man to death in Stapleton was arraigned and remanded into custody Tuesday in Richmond County Criminal Court.

Carlos Rivera, 37, of Targee Street, faces several charges, including second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon , tampering with physical evidence and criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.

According to the criminal complaint, on Monday around 3:40 p.m., Rivera stabbed Joël Badillo, 41, “in the body with a dangerous instrument, namely a knife, thus causing his death.”

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Broad Street, near Gordon Street, when officers responding to a 911 call found Badillo suffering from a stab wound to the chest. EMS transported Badillo to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the police statement.

Badillo was taken to Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton in stable condition with a stab wound to the leg, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation.

A significant NYPD presence was visible in the area where a massive blood splatter was visible on the street corner in front of a convenience store.

Although authorities have not released a motive for the attack, a police source described the killing as an escalation of a dispute between two known individuals who were accused of being complicit in the same drug ring years ago. several years.

An attorney for Rivera could not be reached for comment.

The case will go before the grand jury on Thursday.
