The search for a possible drowning victim is underway on the Neuse River, according to the Wake County Sheriff's Office

RALEIGH, North Carolina (WTVD) — The Wake County Sheriff's Office and other water rescue agencies are searching for a possible drowning victim on the Neuse River.

The sheriff's office said deputies responded to calls about a possible drowning near the Neuse River Greenway Trail and Loch Raven Parkway just after 4 p.m.

Chris Gillespie was doing construction work on the other side of the river and told ABC11 that the river is a popular place to relax…

“All evening I'll see people along the bank and stuff here, fishing, hanging out, and I feel like they're having a good time,” he said.

But Gillespie also said he knew it could be dangerous. Current can move quickly and care must be taken.

Just two weeks before crews recovered the body of a man who had fallen underwater in the same area and never reappeared.

He said he lost a friend to drowning years ago and knows how terrifying it can be as families wait and pray.

“We don't know, there are rocks under the water, it could be slippery, someone could stand on the rocks and hit their head. We don't know what happened,” he said. he declared.

Authorities said several agencies were involved in the search.
