The mother of a missing teenager “beside herself and worried”

The mother of a missing teenager in Tenerife said she was “beside herself and worried”.

Jay Slater, 19, from Oswaldtwistle was last interviewed at 8:50am on Monday June 17. According to a location pin sent to her friend Lucy, her last known location was near Teno Rural Park.

He said he was lost in the middle of the mountains, with nothing around.

Jay attended a music festival on the island and later decided to stay with people he met after a night out, not realizing how far apart they lived. He then attempted to walk home when he got lost in the mountains.

Searches were underway to find him near the village of Masca, in the Parque Rural de Teno.

Mum Debbie also revealed 'sick' people were pulling pranks.

Speaking earlier from the island where her son was staying, Debbie said: “I've only been in Tenerife for about 10 minutes and I've just had a quick chat with someone from the British Embassy and I wait for him to call back. so I know a little more. The consulate has done really well so far.”

She added: “He had been at a three-day festival so would have consumed quite a bit of alcohol, but Jay was chatting to friends before disappearing and seemed very calm.

“I just think it was because he didn't know the island well enough because it was his first time here and he was a little disoriented about the distances and he didn't didn't realize that it was a 10-hour walk from where he disappeared to his vacation accommodation.

“I know the last place he spoke to his friend Lucy was in the mountains and I think the police now have a more precise location.”

She also said sick people called claiming they were keeping her son captive.

She said: “Some of the phone calls I’ve received have been horrible. I just don't know why people would want to do things like that.

“I received a lot of prank calls. It's disgusting. People call me and tell me they have Jay because he owes them money.

“But that doesn't put me off and I want to keep it in the news because it's going to increase the chances that Jay will be found safe, which is obviously what we're praying for.”

Isabelle posted a new video to the Missing Jay Slater Facebook page this evening and said: “This is a clear video of what Jay was wearing the night he went missing.

“To all the vile and evil humans, whether it's comments, posts, or fake GoFundMes, this needs to stop. They are just unnecessary and hurtful.”
