The Little Sioux River near Cherokee is expected to soon reach its peak again on Monday

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Iowa (KCAU) — The Little Sioux River near Cherokee is expected to peak again Monday, according to Cherokee County Emergency Management.

According to authorities, the peak is expected to reach its first peak in the coming hours. The river is expected to crest again Monday, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

The figures provided may not be accurate because a river sensor in a tributary of the Little Sioux, Mill Creek, is submerged in water and is currently unable to give correct readings.

Manual readings provided to the National Weather Service by Rick Angell and David Boothby allowed the National Weather Service to create a model. This model shows that the water will drop a little overnight Saturday night, but will begin to slowly rise Sunday night into Monday.

The river is currently forecast to crest at approximately 27.5 feet. This increase in water is due to water from Spencer and lakes entering the area.

Additionally, Cherokee County Emergency Management announced that the Cherokee Community Center is open for those who wish to evacuate their homes.

Cherokee County officials will continue to provide updates on social media pages such as Cherokee County, IA Emergency Management Agency and the Cherokee County Iowa Sheriff's Office.
