The last | More than 30 dead in Israeli strikes overnight in Gaza, including on a school transformed into a shelter – KGET 17

Dozens of people died after an Israeli strike hit a school turned shelter in Gaza overnight. Israel claimed Thursday that the school was used as a Hamas compound, without providing evidence.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah received at least 30 bodies from the strike against the school run by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees – known by the acronym UNRWA – and six more from another strike against a house. The Israeli military later said it was not aware of any civilian casualties in the attack on the school.

International pressure has intensified to limit civilian bloodshed in the war between Israel and Hamas. Spain's foreign minister announced Thursday that his country would ask a United Nations court for permission to join South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza. US President Joe Biden's administration has launched an intense campaign to persuade Hamas and Israel to accept a new ceasefire proposal and release of hostages, raising hopes of ending the war.

Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza has killed more than 36,000 Palestinians, according to the Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.

The eight-month war in Gaza has largely interrupted the supply of food, medicine and other supplies to Palestinians facing widespread hunger. UN agencies say more than a million people in Gaza could experience the highest level of famine by mid-July.

Israel launched the war after the October 7 Hamas attack, in which militants stormed into southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people – mostly civilians – and kidnapping about 250. 80 hostages captured on October 7 are still alive in Gaza. alongside the remains of 43 other people.

RECENT DRONE STRIKE IN NORTHERN ISRAEL KILLED RESERVE SOLDIER, ARMY SAYS

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military said Thursday that a drone strike on a northern Israeli village the day before killed an Israeli reserve soldier.

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said it launched an attack on a gathering of military officials in response to a previous Israeli cross-border attack.

The Israeli military said two explosive drones were fired toward Hurfeish, a village in northern Israel.

Air raid sirens did not go off before the strike, and Israeli authorities said the strike injured more than 10 people in addition to the killed soldier. The Army identified the fallen soldier as Staff Sgt. (res.) Refael Kauders, 39 years old.

With Kaunders' death, 16 soldiers have been killed in northern Israel since October, along with 10 civilians.

More than 400 people have been killed in Lebanon, including more than 70 civilians and non-combatants.

Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire daily since the day after the October 7 Hamas attack, which sparked the war in Gaza. The deadly fighting has displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the Israeli-Lebanese border and raised fears of a wider regional war.

Israeli military says it is not aware of any civilian casualties during its school strike

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military said Thursday it was not aware of any civilian casualties in a strike that killed at least 33 Palestinians, including 23 women and children, according to local officials and an AP reporter at the hospital that received the bodies.

The strike took place Thursday morning on a United Nations school housing displaced Palestinians in central Gaza. Israeli army spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner said intelligence indicated that militants used the school grounds to orchestrate some of the Oct. 7 attacks and that at least 20 militants were currently using it as a “stage” to launch attacks against Israeli soldiers.

“To my knowledge, no civilians were involved in this matter. We will review the data and intelligence that comes out in the next few hours or day,” Lerner told reporters.

He declined to say whether the army would investigate the strike, as it did in May when an Israeli strike near a tent camp housing displaced people killed dozens in the town of Rafah. the southernmost part of Gaza.

SPAIN ASKS TO JOIN SOUTH AFRICA CASE ACCUSING ISRAEL OF GENOCIDE

MADRID — Spain will ask a United Nations court for permission to join the South African case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza, its foreign minister announced Thursday.

Spain is the first European country to take this step after South Africa filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice in late 2023. It alleged that Israel was violating the genocide convention during its military attack which ravaged large swathes of Gaza.

Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Libya and the Palestinians have already asked to join the case currently being heard by the court in The Hague, Netherlands.

The court ordered Israel to immediately end its military offensive in the southern Gaza town of Rafah, but did not order a ceasefire for the enclave. Israel did not comply.

Spain's request to join the case is the latest step taken by the government of socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to support peacemaking efforts in Gaza.

Israel denies committing genocide as part of its military operation to crush Hamas sparked by its deadly October 7 attacks in southern Israel.

Hamas killed 1,200 people and took 250 others hostage in these surprise attacks. Israel's air and ground attacks have killed 36,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry, which does not distinguish between fighters and civilians.

ISRAELI STRIKE KILLS DOZENS IN SCHOOL-TURNED-SHELTER IN GAZA

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip — An Israeli strike Thursday morning on a school-turned-shelter in central Gaza that the army said was being used as a Hamas compound killed at least 30 people, including five children , according to local health officials.

The strike comes after the army announced it was launching new air and ground operations in central Gaza, in an apparent widening of its nearly eight-month offensive, launched after the Hamas attack from October 7. An international medical charity had reported rising numbers of casualties even before Thursday's strike.

The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah received at least 30 bodies following the strike against the school run by the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees – known by the acronym UNRWA – and six more in another strike on a house, according to hospital records and an Associated Press reporter at the hospital. Hamas-run television had earlier reported a higher toll.

The Israeli military claimed, without immediately providing evidence, that Hamas and Islamic Jihad were using the school as a cover for their operations and that risk reduction measures had been taken before the attack.

The war began with the Oct. 7 Hamas attack in Israel that killed at least 1,200 people and took another 250 hostage. The Israeli military campaign in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 36,000 Palestinians, and hundreds more have been killed in operations in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

YEMEN’S HOUTHI REBELS UNVEIL NEW SOLID FUEL MISSILE

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Yemen's Houthi rebels have unveiled a new solid-fuel missile in their arsenal that resembles one previously demonstrated by Iran and which Tehran has described as flying at hypersonic speeds.

The rebels on Monday fired their new “Palestine” missile, equipped with a warhead painted like a checkered Palestinian keffiyeh, at the port of Eilat, in the southern Gulf of Aqaba, in Israel. The attack triggered air raid sirens, but caused no damage or injuries.

Footage released by the Houthis on Wednesday evening shows the Palestine being lifted onto what appears to be a mobile launcher and rapidly rising into the air with plumes of white smoke coming from its engine. White smoke is common with solid fuel missiles.

Solid fuel missiles can be deployed and fired more quickly than liquid fuel missiles. This is a major concern for the Houthis, as their missile launch sites have been repeatedly targeted by U.S. and allied forces in recent months due to rebel attacks on ships transiting the corridor. Red Sea. One of these strikes hit the Houthis before they could even launch their missile.
