A well-known white shark named LeeBeth has made its way to Cape Cod after traveling 6,000 miles since it was spotted off the coast of South Carolina in December.

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy said LeeBeth, the shark, was spotted off the coast of Chatham on Wednesday.

The Chatham-based conservancy said LeeBeth made history when she was detected off the coast of Matamoros, Mexico, on February 28, after being tagged by scientists in South Carolina on December 8, 2023.

β€œShe has now traveled over 6,000 miles since she was tagged! Do you think she'll stay on Cape Cod? Or will it continue its journey further north, into Canadian waters? the conversation wrote on X.

Scientists said the public can follow LeeBeth on the Sharktivity app, which allows users to report and stay up to date with local shark sightings.

LeeBeth's arrival in Massachusetts waters comes just after scientists warned of white shark activity off local beaches. In May, several marine mammals were bitten, apparently by the ferocious predators of the Atlantic.

Marine scientists have urged beachgoers to be alert when embarking on summer activities in coastal waters.

White sharks, often called great whites, were designated a protected species in 1997.
