The deadline to apply for the Sheriff's Office's 5th Annual Teen Academy is June 1.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office will host its 5th annual Teen Academy July 8-12 at Genesee Community College. Over the past few months, posters and flyers have been posted in Genesee County schools, and the June 1 deadline to apply is just days away. There is no cost to attend the academy.

“Our partnership with GCC allowed us to introduce Teen Academy participants to the college's criminal justice facilities, which include a 9-1-1 dispatch console simulator and a firearms simulator. The Teen Academy is a structured, week-long program that includes educational courses designed to provide high school students in our community with an introduction to law enforcement.
training and gain an understanding of the role of law enforcement in their community. We hope the teens will develop confidence while learning good decision-making and leadership skills,” Sheriff Sheron said.

Academy instructors are experienced deputy sheriffs who will discuss the day-to-day operations of the sheriff's office. Participants will also be able to:

  • visit the county jail, 911 emergency dispatch center and sheriff's office
  • observe Emergency Response Team (ERT), Hostage Negotiation, K-9 Unit, and Evidence Recovery presentations
  • get an overview of motor vehicle accident reconstruction
  • participate in daily fitness runs, defensive tactics and team building exercises
  • Participate in a classroom setting and learn about New York State criminal laws and vehicle and traffic laws.
  • participate in simulated traffic stops and DWI procedures

Qualified candidates will be selected for an interview selection process if they meet the following requirements:

  • must have entered grades 10-12 at the time of application submission
  • must have a good academic record with few or no disciplinary problems
  • must be able to participate in physical fitness activities
  • must have a positive attitude
  • must have parental permission
