The Coconino National Forest is implementing Level 1 fire and smoking restrictions on Thursday, June 6.

Due to the condition of the forest and a number of key factors, Coconino National Forest Implements Level 1 Fire and Smoking Restrictions starting at 8 a.m. Thursday, June 6, throughout the Coconino National Forest.

Under Stage 1 restrictions, fires, campfires, charcoal, wood stoves and smoking pots are prohibited except in a developed recreation site.

Smoking is also prohibited except in an enclosed vehicle, building or official. developed leisure site. The fireworks are always prohibited on all national forests. The use of a device powered only by pressurized liquid petroleum, propane or LPG that can be turned on and off is permitted in areas that are sterile or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within one meter of the device.

Fire restrictions are implemented to help prevent human-caused fires and limit visitor exposure during potentially dangerous fire periods, Coconino NF said in a press release. Decisions regarding fire restrictions are based on a combination of factors. Criteria used to determine when to implement restrictions include current and forecast weather conditions, fuel moisture, fire activity levels, continuing drought, and available firefighting resources.

Additional restrictions may be imposed if conditions warrant. Fire restrictions generally remain in effect until the area receives significant and widespread precipitation. Violations could result in a mandatory appearance in federal court, fines or prison time.

Always use caution when recreating on public lands, regardless of restrictions.

National wildfire restrictions may differ from local, county and state restrictions, so be sure to check the location of where you are recreating or camping for specific fire restrictions. Below you will find resources for many different locations across Arizona:
