Texas couple identified as victims of fatal crash on I-80 in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa State Patrol has released the names of two people who died after their SUV left I-80 early Saturday morning and landed upside down in a creek in Des Moines.

The crash happened near mile marker 134 of eastbound I-80, just west of 2nd Avenue, around 7:20 a.m., according to an ISP crash report. William Engel, 65, was driving a Honda CR-V when the SUV veered off the road to the right and struck a guardrail and a pole, then fell off the embankment into a creek and landed upside down in the water.


The report states that Rose Engel, 58, was pronounced dead at the scene. William Engel was taken to the hospital but later died. Both were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The Engels were originally from Cookville, Texas.

The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
