Terry Marriott Sr. denied bail on trafficking charges

Terry Marriott Sr. was denied bail on drug charges.

The 66-year-old man was arrested last week at his Spryfield apartment along with his girlfriend and two 17-year-old teenagers. All were accused of drug trafficking.

The Crown opposed Marriott's release, so he was jailed for a long weekend until his bail hearing on Tuesday.

Evidence and arguments from this hearing are prohibited from publication.

Ultimately, Judge Michael Sherar denied the defense's request to release Marriott.

He is being held in jail until his next court appearance on August 27. His girlfriend, Darlene Richards, 43, was released on conditions following a separate bail hearing earlier Tuesday.

Marriott spent more than half of his adult life behind bars. His criminal history began in 1966, when he was only 17 years old.

Marriott stayed out of trouble for 12 years, until he was charged with drug trafficking in 2009. At his sentencing in 2012, his lawyer told the court that Marriott had only returned to trafficking of drugs than to try to find clues to the murder of his son.

Terry Marriott Jr. was killed at a home in Harrietsfield in 2009. Last month, Jimmy Melvin Jr. was charged with first-degree murder for the younger Marriott's death.

Melvin is now being held in the same jail as Terry Marriott Sr. as both men await their next court appearance.

The Melvin and Marriott gangs were involved in a violent battle for control of the city's drug trade. These include drive-by shootings and firebombings.
