Ten injured in downtown Madison shooting

At least 10 people were injured in a filming in downtown Madison early Sunday morning at a rooftop party near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.

Of the victims, five were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Madison Police Department (MPD) Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference Sunday. The victims were aged 14 to 23 and some were high school students.

The shooting happened on the roof of the Lux, an apartment building on West Johnson Street that houses many UW-Madison students. Nine of the victims suffered gunshot or abrasion injuries, and another was injured by broken glass found at the scene, Barnes said.

At this time, none of the people injured or involved are known to be affiliated with UW-Madison, according to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department.

“It’s really a miracle that no one died,” Barnes said at the news conference Sunday morning.

Emergency personnel responded around 1 a.m. to what police believe may have been a high school graduation party. Barnes said dozens of people were screaming and running out of the building when MPD arrived on scene. Police estimate several hundred people were present.

“A teenager who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds was found bleeding in the street. Officers were advised that there were likely more victims in the building,” Barnes said. “These students should have celebrated their summer vacation and not received medical care. »

Barnes said it was likely MPD was looking for more than one suspect because the shell casings indicated two different weapons. No arrests have been made and the motive is unclear.

“We are going to work to ensure that whoever is responsible for this is brought to justice,” Barnes said. “But we can only do this with the help of our community.”

MPD is asking anyone with information or video related to the shooting contact the police department. Information can also be sent online to Madison Area Crime Stoppers at p3tips.com or at 608-266-6014.

Barnes said a news release with updates on the incident will be available Sunday at 4 p.m. Another press conference is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.
