Michigan Works tells me there are many benefits to starting work at a young age. I'm Sarah Poulos, a reporter for Holt Neighborhood News, here in Holt, where a local ice cream parlor lets teens take the reins during the summer.

More than 800 student employees.

Throughout 50 years.

Sweet Sensations is the perfect place for summer jobs in Holt.

“We've always hired teenagers, you know, I was here when I was a baby and it's always been like that, it's always been teenagers.”

Co-owner Kristina Greathouse tells me that over the years she has seen these teens learn several valuable skills.

“You learn the basics of time management, responsibilities, multitasking, everything big in life.”

Capital Area Michigan Works leaders say entering the workforce at a young age can pay off.

“If you develop your skills now and gain some of that knowledge, it will make you more employable in the future.”

Something longtime Sweet Sensations workers hope to see with their own eyes.

But not before another summer in one of the city's most popular spots.

“Meeting new people is always fun and there are new people who come every year, so it’s exciting to teach them how to do it.”

If you have a teen in our neighborhood looking to start working over the summer, Richardson tells me Michigan Works is always available and has resources to help you. In Holt, I'm Sarah Poulos, Fox 47 News.
