Teenager stabs mother's attacker in self-defense, suspect faces charges

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – An Odessa man was arrested last weekend after investigators say he tried to shoot his ex-girlfriend. Michael Roy Guzman, Jr., 38, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, unlawful carrying of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of a protective vest -shot by a felon and violation of parole.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, on June 2, officers were called to a home in the 2700 block of Redwood Drive to investigate a disturbance after a woman called 911 and said she had an argument with her ex-boyfriend, who has been identified. like Guzman, when he arrived at her house to collect some of her belongings and his affairs escalated into a physical altercation.


The woman told investigators that at one point during the argument, Guzman grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head into her steering wheel as he tried to drive away, hanging her mid-way. path of the vehicle. The woman said that when she broke free, she started running towards her house and was greeted by her 18-year-old son who had come out to see what was happening. The teen told investigators he saw Guzman running after his mother and the two began fighting, leading Guzman to be stabbed in self-defense, according to the report.

At that point, the victim and her son said Guzman fired a single bullet into the house and then walked away from the scene. Investigators said surveillance video and a 9mm shell casing found at the scene confirmed Guzman was the aggressor and that he attacked the woman in her yard.

Investigators later found Guzman after he drove to Medical Center Hospital to seek treatment for his stab wound; Inside Guzman's vehicle, officers said they found a handgun, a bulletproof vest and 22 grams of cocaine.

Upon his release from the hospital, Guzman was arrested and taken into custody. He remained at the Ector County Law Enforcement Center Tuesday afternoon on a combined bond of $105,000.
