Teenager shot dead outside Renton Big 5 Sporting Goods

According to the Renton Police Department, a 51-year-old suspect is in custody.

RENTON, Wash. — A teenager was killed outside a Renton sporting goods store after an altercation Wednesday evening.

According to the Renton Police Department (RPD), the 17-year-old was shot in a Big 5 Sporting Goods parking lot around 7:45 p.m.

According to RPD communications manager Meeghan Black, the victim and two other 17-year-olds were entering the store when there was an altercation between them and a 51-year-old man. It's unclear what exactly led to the altercation, but according to Black, it turned physical.

KING 5 asked if police had any idea what the altercation was about.

“Unfortunately, at this time, it’s just too early to tell,” Black said.

She said detectives would also ask King County sheriff's deputies who were on scene during their training exercise if they saw or heard anything.

“It just shows that we're facing a crisis and an epidemic in our communities all across the country, really, and it's due to this gun violence,” Black said.

The 51-year-old man allegedly shot the victim. He is now in custody and cooperating with police, according to Black.

The King County Sheriff's Office was conducting a training exercise in the same parking lot and was able to quickly respond to the scene. The police attempted to take life-saving measures, but the teenager died instantly.
