Teenager on car ride damages 4 cars

Officers at a police station in Gyeonggi Province said Monday they are investigating a teenager for a possible traffic violation after the teen's unlicensed driving led to a collision with four cars.

The teenage suspect, whose identity has not been released, took a Hyundai Sonata around 11:10 p.m. Sunday and drove it around Dongan-gu, Anyang, 18 kilometers south of Seoul. He told police he did so because he had an argument with his mother.

The boy, who did not have a driving license, hit a truck, then three parked cars after fleeing. The truck driver reported the incident to local police, who arrived at the scene and took the boy into custody.

He is being investigated for driving without a valid license and failing to take appropriate action after causing a traffic accident. The car he was driving was registered as the property of a local car rental agency.

Police confirmed that although the suspect is a minor, he is not considered a minor criminal: people under the age of 14 benefit from immunity from any form of criminal sanction. Authorities are investigating how an unlicensed minor was able to get their hands on a rental car, as the law requires car rental agencies to check their customers' licenses.
