Teenager fatally struck by hit-and-run truck driver in New York, 8-year-old sister seriously injured

A 16-year-old girl was killed and her 8-year-old sister was seriously injured when they were struck by a hit-and-run truck driver in a Queens crosswalk Wednesday afternoon, according to police and sources.

The siblings were trying to cross at the intersection of 47th Avenue and 46th Street in Woodside around 3:30 p.m. when the driver hit them, NYPD Transportation Chief Philip Rivera said.

The sisters were in the crosswalk when they were struck, police said.

The driver of the white Ready Refresh delivery truck fled but was arrested a block away, authorities said.

Cops said the teen died at the scene in front of IS 125, where her younger sister was a student, according to sources.

The 8-year-old was rushed by paramedics to Cornell Medical Center in critical condition due to leg injuries.

Their “inconsolable” mother burst into tears at the intersection.

“His eyes were sticking out. She's alive but it looks like she lost a part of herself,” said witness Justin Castillo, 15, who saw the aftermath of the accident.

“The poor girl was very young. Her backpack was right next to her, on the side,” he added.

“It was difficult to see the mother. She tried to act strong, but everyone who saw her saw that she was about to lose her mind.

Rivera said the driver is in custody and has not yet been charged.
