Teenager evacuated from fire scene after being hit by fire truck

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Update:A 17-year-old boy was evacuated from the scene of a brush fire in Terre Haute after being struck by a Prairieton Fire Department pickup truck.

According to the Vigo County Sheriff's Office, the incident happened at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday near a residence on S. Paddock Place. It was initially called a brush fire, but as firefighters were en route, firefighters requested EMS and a lifeline to the scene.


VCSO Chief of Operations Derek Fell said when deputies arrived on scene, they learned a 2017 Dodge Ram 1500 registered to the Prairieton/Prairie Creek Fire Department had struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was a 17-year-old male, whose identity has not been released. The firefighter driving the truck was tested for drugs and alcohol, Chief Fell said, with preliminary results coming back negative.

The injured boy was treated at the scene by emergency medical services before being flown by helicopter to Indianapolis Methodist Hospital.

Chief Fell said the firefighter's identity is not being released at this time and he could not provide an updated status of the injured boy.

Investigators and accident reconstruction teams investigated the incident. The investigation is ongoing.


Original:Emergency crews from the Prairieton Fire Department responded to a fire in the area of ​​12000 S. Paddock Place in southern Vigo County Wednesday evening.

“We were responding to some hay bales that were on fire and one of our units was involved in a motor vehicle collision. At this time, until the investigation is further completed, we are not permitted to release any further information,” said Prairieton Fire Department Deputy Chief Scott Dean.

Our team on scene says an air ambulance has landed on scene. They also observed several emergency vehicles on scene and saw smoke and flames.
