A teenager drowned Sunday in Jordan Lake in Chatham County.

Deputies say Bryan Guzman, 16, of Winston-Salem, drowned Sunday around 3:30 p.m. near Ebenezer Picnic Area A, 452 Ebenezer Road in New Hill.

According to the Chatham County Sheriff's Office, Guzman was going to Jordan Lake with his 18-year-old brother and a friend to celebrate another friend's birthday.

The 18-year-old brother called 911, reporting that Guzman was in distress while swimming in a creek near the picnic area.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the Guzman family during this very difficult time,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said. “Our thoughts are with them as they mourn the loss of their son and brother. »

The Sheriff's Office urged all visitors to Jordan Lake and other bodies of water to observe the following safety precautions:

  • Wear a life jacket.
  • Swim only in designated areas.
  • Monitor children closely.
  • Be aware of water conditions and your surroundings.

The Chatham County Sheriff's Office Victim Services Unit is working with the Guzman family to provide support and resources. Our team is dedicated to helping families cope with such tragic losses and ensuring they receive the care and support they need.
