Teenager dies in Riverton crash after running red light, police say

RIVERTON — A teenager was killed in a crash in the Mountain View corridor early Thursday morning, police said.

According to Riverton Police Department Public Information Officer Josh Lee, a teenager was driving just after midnight on 13400 South. Lee said they ran a red light and were then struck by another vehicle traveling south on Mountain View Corridor.

The teenage driver, who police did not identify, was later pronounced dead. The other driver was a woman who reported no injuries to police.

The crash occurred during the “Deadliest 100 Days” on Utah's roads, and Lee wanted to remind the community how dangerous summer roads can be.

“Young drivers and all drivers: you need to be aware of the speed you are driving; the signs and signals thrown at you. It’s very important,” Lee said. “Especially here in the summer, we all feel invincible. »

The southbound Mountain View corridor was closed at 13400 South for several hours while investigators were on scene.

Lee said the speed limit on Mountain View Corridor is 60 mph and the woman was driving a larger car than the teen.

“Obviously one of the drivers was doing everything right. But there was a red light on the other driver and this can happen. So be aware,” Lee said. “Be aware of your surroundings.”

The South Valley Crash Investigation Team was investigating the scene after the crash, and Riverton police said the cause of the crash was still under investigation.
