Teenager dies at Howard Houses – NBC New York

A 12-year-old boy faces manslaughter charges in the shooting death of a 14-year-old in Brooklyn on Sunday, police said.

Police sources said Jasai Guy, 14, and his cousin were playing with a gun in a fifth-floor apartment at the Howard Houses when the teen was shot in the chest.

Medics recovered the teen and rushed him to Brookdale University Hospital, where he was eventually pronounced dead.

Neighbors said the young victim was a good kid who was often found hanging out with friends at nearby basketball courts.

“It’s sad that the kids can’t even go outside and play, or be inside and play,” one neighbor said.

The weekend shooting happened just steps from where a 30-year-old man was shot and killed just two weeks ago.

“Now you have a 14-year-old involved in a shooting. Where are these guys coming from? And you need to do something with these ghost guns floating around here,” the man said.

The latest data provided by the New York police show a deadly increase in the 73rd precinct where the Brownsville shooting took place on Sunday. So far this year, 12 murders have been reported, compared to four at the same time last year.

The 12-year-old, not identified because of his age, faces charges of involuntary manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and criminal possession of a weapon, according to the New York Police Department.
