Teenager crashes SUV into stationary car; 4 injured | Pune News

PUNE: Four members of a family were injured after a compact SUV, driven by an 18-year-old student allegedly in an inebriated state, rammed into their auto-rickshaw at Parandenagar on Porwal Road in Lohegaon around midnight on Sunday.

The autorickshaw had stopped in front of an ice cream parlor when the vehicle hit it, causing the three-wheeler to flip onto its side.

The driver of the car, Ashok Payaal, 40, and some passers-by apprehended the driver and his friend, who were traveling in the SUV, and called the airport police who took the student into custody . The teenager's father works in a private company in Dubai and his mother is a stage artist, police said. “Investigations revealed that the student had recently obtained a driving license. He lost control of the new SUV which went off the road and hit the autorickshaw,” senior inspector Anand Khobre told TOI.

The teen driver's physical appearance gives enough indication that he was driving under the influence of alcohol, Khobre said. “We have conducted his medical examination and his blood alcohol report is awaited. During initial interrogation, both men admitted to consuming alcohol at the teenager's home in Dhanori late on Sunday evening before going out because the 18-year-old wanted to drop his friend at home,” he said.

On Monday afternoon, the teenager was arrested for offenses under sections 279 (reckless and negligent driving), 337 and 338 (both relating to an act endangering human life or the personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 184. (dangerous driving) and 185 (driving by an intoxicated person) of the Motor Vehicles Act.

“We produced him before a municipal court, which ordered his release on bail,” the police officer said.

In his complaint, Payaal said that after dinner at his home in Dhanori, he took his family to the ice cream shop in Parandenagar. He got down and went to the store while his family stayed in the rickshaw. At that point, the SUV slammed into his vehicle, injuring family members and significantly damaging his car, Payaal said. The SUV was heading towards Dhanori grant post from DY Patil College area, police said. Payaal's wife Jyoti (35), daughter Amruta (12), mother-in-law Saybin Salvi (58) and niece Sanika Salvi (6) suffered leg fractures and internal injuries. They were admitted to a nearby hospital, police said.
