Teenager, 17, killed in workplace accident at Co Cavan recycling plant – The Irish Times

A 17-year-old boy died following a workplace accident at a recycling plant in Co Cavan on Thursday.

The teenager, from the area, died in an accident at Wilton Recycling Center in Crosserlough.

The company offered its “deepest condolences” to the boy’s family, friends and colleagues.

“As a sign of respect, the company has decided to close its doors until further notice,” said a spokesperson.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly after 4.30pm. The teenager was pronounced dead at the scene, Gardaí said.

His body was taken from the scene to Cavan Mortuary. An autopsy will take place in due course.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been informed. A file will be prepared for the coroner's court.

The 17-year-old was a “hard-working young man” who completed his junior certificate last year, according to local Fine Gael councilor Trevor Smith.

“This is a terrible tragedy in our area, and we are all devastated for the parents, siblings and entire family. They are now in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.

Smith described the teen as a “popular young guy” from a farming background who had taken a summer job at a recycling facility.

Fine Gael councilor Winston J Bennett said the local community was “devastated”, adding that the young worker was “just starting his life”.

“It's a tragedy. Everyone is devastated by it,” he said.
