Teen who allegedly killed 14-year-old over vaping products asks for bail – NBC 6 South Florida

A transaction involving vaping products turned deadly when the alleged seller shot the 14-year-old buyer in the chest.

The shooting took place in 2021 at a park in southwest Miami-Dade. Nineteen-year-old William Garrido, who was 17 at the time, began chatting with Angelo Guzman on Snapchat.

The teens coordinated and met at a park because Guzman wanted to buy $200 worth of vaping products, including cartridges, batteries and vape pens, police said.

However, records show, Guzman attempted to pay Garrido with counterfeit money. That's when Garrido allegedly started shooting.

Last year, police arrested Garrido two years after the shooting. After nearly a year in prison, Garrido is asking to be placed under house arrest or given some sort of bail.

On Wednesday, defense attorneys tried to argue that there was no direct evidence that Garrido was the shooter.

“The gun was found and they can trace it back to this shooting. The gun was not found on Mr. Garrido or anyone related to Mr. Garrido, but on a completely different person in Homestead who has since fled,” Richard Gregg, one of two lawyers representing Garrido, said during a hearing with Arthur. “They can’t find him and yet they don’t investigate him and charge our client.”

It's unclear how Garrido ended up with the stolen gun used in Guzman's murder. However, prosecutors are convinced he is the shooter.

Police said cellphone data located the accused around the crime scene before and after the shooting. They believe he also posted messages on social media about the murder weapon. Through search warrants, they also discovered a box of ammunition in his bedroom.

“The stamp on the box found at the scene is unique to the brand of the box found in his room,” said the lead detective in the case.

A judge did not rule Wednesday because she wanted to review more evidence.
