Teen seriously injured after jumping from Boston courthouse balcony

A teenager jumped from a fourth-floor balcony at the Edward W. Brooke Courthouse in Boston on Monday, according to Massachusetts State Police.

State police confirmed to PEOPLE that the teen, whose identity has not been released, jumped from the courthouse balcony to the first floor shortly before 11 a.m. local time Monday morning .

The boy was “seriously injured” after his jump and was later transported to a Boston hospital.

Police say the teen was at the courthouse after recently being arrested for domestic violence. He was not in custody when he arrived at the courthouse to answer, reportedly, in juvenile court.

“The victim apparently jumped from a balcony overlooking an interior atrium to the first floor,” a state police spokesperson told PEOPLE.. “He was seriously injured and was transported to a Boston hospital.”

The incident remains under investigation by state police.

According to Daily Maila witness reported hearing “screaming” at the courthouse Monday morning.

“When I looked up, it was from the fourth floor,” the witness said on social media, according to the outlet. “You see a mother screaming up there and her daughter, or a young woman, was up there screaming. A lot of people were running from one side of the field to the other.
