MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A teenager appeared in court for the first time Monday after police say he committed a series of crimes before leading police on a chase.

Isaiah Hawkins, 18, will remain in prison for the moment after learning the seriousness of the charges against him.

The teen allegedly crashed into two Memphis police cruisers before attempting to flee on foot, following a carjacking last week.

Hawkins appeared before Judicial Commissioner Serena Gray, who was standing in for Judge Bill Anderson. He was informed he was facing more than one offense.

The first would have taken place at the end of May. Police say Hawkins stole a man's vehicle before trying to sell it for scrap. Detectives say he didn't make it.

Less than two weeks later, he would have started again. This time, police said Hawkins put a gun to a man's head before taking his car and wallet.

When investigators attempted to conduct a traffic stop, they said the teen took off, crashing into the stolen car while hitting two Memphis police cars.

For the second offense, he faces six felony and three misdemeanor charges.

For now, Hawkins will remain in custody after telling the deputy judge he couldn't afford the combined $160,000 bail. He also told the court he needed a court-appointed lawyer.

He has a bond hearing scheduled for Tuesday morning. We will continue to follow this story.
