Teen posts $500,000 bail after deadly Alderwood Mall shooting

LYNNWOOD — An Edmonds teenager posted $500,000 bail Thursday, a day after police arrested him in the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old girl at the Alderwood Mall, authorities said.

As of Friday, no hearing had been scheduled for the 16-year-old boy in juvenile court. On Wednesday, Lynnwood police said the teen had been arrested on murder charges, but it was unclear what charge authorities had arrested him on.

Officials at the Denney Juvenile Justice Center were unable to provide a police report on the shooting.

Police identified the victim as Jayda Woods-Johnson. As of Friday afternoon, an online fundraiser had raised more than $18,400 to cover funeral and living expenses for her family.

She is survived by her parents and two younger siblings.

“Jayda was so full of energy and life; she laughed her ass off, she was the biggest music and movie fanatic I’ve ever known,” the fundraiser read. “Seriously, at 13 years old, I’m convinced she’s seen every movie ever made.”

On Wednesday, Woods-Johnson went to the mall with her friends, “like any 13-year-old would,” according to the fundraiser.

Around 6 p.m., a fight between two groups broke out in the mall's food court, KOMO reported that night. The suspect pulled out a gun and fired at the other group, hitting Woods-Johnson, who was not involved in the fight. She was rushed to the hospital.

Police said both groups fled after the shooting. The mother of the teenage suspect later brought her son to police, authorities said.

Police took the suspect to the Denney Juvenile Justice Center, where he spent the night behind bars.

Around 11 p.m. Wednesday, police announced that Woods-Johnson had died from her injuries.

“She was in a place that should have been safe,” the fundraising document read. “A place we all went as teenagers, on our first ‘outing’ into the world without our parents.”

The Alderwood Mall was closed Thursday, with signs on the doors apologizing for the inconvenience.
