MTV star Amber Portwood and her former fiancé Gary Wayt found themselves in couples therapy before they even planned to become husband and wife.

Their relationship problems preceded the disappearance of Gary, 39, earlier this month – he was found shortly after Amber, 34, reported him missing. In a new episode of Teen Mom: Next Chapter airing Thursday, the reality TV personality opened up about the issues the two were having as they built their relationship.

One of the challenges that presented itself in their “good” relationship was Amber's long battle with mental illness – she was diagnosed with bipolar and borderline personality disorder in 2011.

Amber's mental illness “may make her unable to remember certain situations, conversations or events,” according to TooFab. The former 16 & Pregnant student and Gary's relationship reached a turning point when he witnessed Amber experience a manic episode for the very first time.
