A 17-year-old boy was shot and killed outside Market Basket in Lynn Saturday evening, police said.

Police went to the Federal Street grocery store just after 9 p.m., where they found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound inside his vehicle, according to Lynn police. The 17-year-old, who has not been identified, was taken to Salem Hospital where he died.

Essex County Prosecutor Paul Tucker told reporters Sunday that several gunshots hit the 17-year-old's vehicle, which then rolled into a ravine and bushes.

Lynn police, along with Massachusetts State Police, said the incident was not random. Tucker said the 17-year-old was targeted.

“It was a very busy evening and unfortunately, gun violence took place in two very good communities,” Tucker said, referring to a shooting in Methuen. “We are doing everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.”

The two shootings are unrelated, according to authorities.

Lynn police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 781-595-2000 or email [email protected].
