Teen driving accidents increase in the summer, according to AAA Northeast.

It's summer, and for many teens and their families, that means graduation parties, time with friends, and other festive events.

But it's also a time for teens to be careful, as summer seems to be the time when many car accidents involving teens occur.

“On the heels of a record number of car trips this Memorial Day weekend, summer also heralds a busy travel season that brings increased risk for teen drivers,” according to AAA Northeast.

“For many teen drivers, summer brings more free time with friends and many potential distractions, such as phone use and the presence of multiple teen passengers – which increases their risk of an accident,” a said Mark Schieldrop, senior spokesperson for AAA Northeast. “Any time is a good time for parents and guardians to talk with their teens about risky driving behaviors, the importance of continued driving practice to develop their skills, and the many reasons why they need to stay safe on the road this summer and beyond.

What do the national statistics say?

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 7,435 people died in summer crashes related to teen driving nationwide between 2013 and 2022. AAA Northeast added that in 2022 alone, 790 people were killed in this type of accident, which marks a record. 10% increase compared to 2019 before the pandemic.
