Teen dies after collapsing at Augusta YDC during basketball game

No foul play is suspected in the death of a 17-year-old inmate at the Augusta Youth Development Center.

Ozell Burch, 17, collapsed Sunday on the YDC grounds near Mike Padgett Highway in Augusta, according to Coroner Mark Bowen. He was rushed by paramedics to Wellstar MCG, where he was pronounced dead at 12:41 a.m. Sunday. An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

Burch is from Phenix City, Alabama, the coroner said. It is unclear why Burch was at the facility.

The Department of Juvenile Justice reportedly turned over the death investigation to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. YDC officials released a statement, sending their thoughts and prayers to the teen's family as well as the center's staff.

Online, Burch's grandmother remembered him with a heartfelt Facebook post, saying her heart was heavy after Ozell's death.

“Everyone knows I am very close to my grandchildren,” Sheila Mims wrote on Sunday. “We were for each other and we were dying. Today God called him home and I'm going to miss something terrible. RIP OZELL BURCH Grandma loves you and always will, no matter what. I wish I could have spent one more day with you.

The Augusta YDC is part of a state DJJ campus system whose mission is to “provide justice as well as redirect and shape the lives of youth in the agency's custody so that they can assume responsibility for responsibility for their delinquent behavior and become full members of society.” according to a state website.

DJJ provides incarcerated youth with medical and mental health treatment, as well as specialized programs designed to “equip them with the social, intellectual and emotional tools they will need as adults,” the website states.
