CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy accused of killing a retired Chicago police officer has been charged.

At a press conference Monday evening, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling announced that the teenager, who has not yet been identified, has been charged with first-degree murder and will be tried as a adult.

The charge stems from a shooting that left 73-year-old Larry Neuman dead. Neuman was a retired CPD officer and veteran,

After working at CPD for 28 years, Neuman retired in 2010 and later worked at TSA as an explosives expert.

The teenager is just one of two people believed to be responsible for the fatal shooting and the search continues for the second individual.

Authorities say Neuman was outside his home paying a lawn care worker Thursday when he spotted two individuals allegedly approaching with guns drawn.

Officers said Neuman spotted the armed individuals, pushed the lawn care worker to safety and pulled his gun from his waistband.

The two individuals then opened fire on Neuman. Police say he was able to return fire and the two individuals fled the scene.

During the encounter, Neuman was mortally wounded.

On Saturday, authorities issued a community alert with a photograph and video of the individuals suspected of opening fire on Neuman. The alert generated several anonymous tips that provided authorities with the identity of the 16-year-old boy.

A member of the Zone Four Priority Response Team also recognized the teenager from a previous encounter.

Police say the teen finally turned himself in to authorities on Sunday.

Police say the teen is expected to appear in court Tuesday morning to be arraigned.
