Teen charged in May shooting

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – An Odessa teenager was arrested on a warrant earlier this week in connection with a May shooting that left a man injured. Damian Zane Escobedo, 19, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

According to an Odessa Police Department report, on May 13, officers were called to the 2700 block of Keystone after shots were fired in the area. At the scene, officers spotted a black Chevrolet Silverado speeding away from the area with its hazard lights on; Investigators followed the truck to Medical Center Hospital where they learned a 44-year-old man had been shot in the hip and chest.

During a subsequent investigation, officers learned the victim had been involved in a physical altercation in the 2700 block of Chestnut immediately prior to the shooting. Investigators said security video showed a group of people fighting in the street; a suspect, later identified as Escobedo, was later seen on camera running towards his home and coming out with a gun, which he then fired at the victim.

Based on the evidence, including a 9mm cartridge case recovered at the scene, officers requested a warrant for Escobedo's arrest, and he was taken into custody on June 10. Jail records show Escobedo has since been released from the Ector County Law Enforcement Center on June 10. $25,000 bail.
