Teen charged in fatal Near West Side shooting identified

Syracuse, N.Y. – A 16-year-old accused of assisting another person in the murder of a man on Syracuse's Near West Side has been identified.

Jose Romero, 16, and Josue Pizarro, 26, are accused of shooting Jesus Carmona, 28, multiple times in the 200 block of Sabine Street on April 13, according to an indictment filed in Onondaga County Criminal Court.

Due to his age, Romero was not identified by police after the two men were initially arrested. He was identified after a grand jury indicted Romero and Pizarro on charges of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

Around 12:03 a.m. on April 13, the two men rushed Carmona near 221 Sabine St. and argued, police said in court documents. During the fight, Carmona was shot several times in the head and torso, according to the indictment.

Carmona was found dead by police at the scene in front of the house.

Romero and Pizarro ran away after the shooting and threw away two handguns, police said. Both men were arrested about a month after the shooting.

Now that Romero and Pizarro have been charged, they will be arraigned in Onondaga County Court.
