Teen arrested on suspicion of arson after bus station fire

A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage following a major fire at a bus station.

Police were called shortly before 11pm last night (June 10) following reports of a fire at Burnley Bus Station on Croft Street.

Damage was caused to a bus and the roof of the bus station.

Police have confirmed that a 14-year-old boy from Burnley has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage (arson endangering life) and is in custody.

Investigations are ongoing.

The bus station is today open and fully operational, except for two platforms in the middle which are closed.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene at around 11pm last night and stayed for three hours.

A fire service spokesperson said: “At 11pm on June 10, five fire engines from Burnley, Nelson, Padiham and Great Harwood as well as the Hyndburn aerial platform attended a bus fire on Croft Street, at Burnley.

“Firefighters wore breathing apparatus and used two hose reel jets, a foam branch, a triple extension ladder, a 13.5m extension ladder, cutting tools and a thermal imaging camera to extinguish the fire.

“The teams were there for three hours.”

A video of the scene shared with the Lancashire Telegraph by a member of the public showed a bus engulfed in flames while parked in one of the bays.

Photos from the scene this morning (June 11) showed damage to the bus station roof and work underway to repair the pavement outside.

A First Halifax spokesperson said: “The bus involved in this incident at Burnley Bus Station last night (June 10) was not in use at the time.

“We are helping police investigate the circumstances leading to the fire, including reviewing CCTV footage from on-board cameras.”

Transdev, which provides the majority of services at Burnley bus station, confirmed that none of its buses were involved in the fire.
