Teen arrested in connection with fatal Inwood shooting

Police have made an arrest in connection with the deadly shooting in Inwood reported earlier this week. A 16-year-old boy is now charged with murder.

The arrest took place Tuesday evening, just two days after the tragic incident near the 207th Street subway station. The shooting happened shortly before midnight Sunday.

Two men were killed and a third injured in the shooting. James Michael, 44, was shot in the face and died at Harlem Hospital. Alejandro Ramirez, 40, was shot in the chest and died at NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. A small vigil for Ramirez can now be found near the subway entrance steps. The third man, aged 37, was shot in the leg but survived.

Police said the 16-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with two counts of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon. The community is shocked that the alleged suspect is only 16 years old.

“Sixteen years is crazy. It's a little shocking, but it's not too surprising in this day and age,” Sarah Rivera said. “You know, where we live in New York, it's really bad here. Honestly, it's always noisy. There's always fights here. It's not a good neighborhood, but it still took a lot of people by surprise.”

Candles still burn at the vigil as many local residents stop to pay their respects.
