Teen arrested for harassment at lender within three hours

Police have arrested a 19-year-old boy for his alleged involvement in a lender harassment case.

On June 2, 2024, police were alerted to a case of harassment by loan sharks at a residential unit along Avenue 6 in Bukit Batok West, where loan shark writings were scrawled on the wall. A can of red paint was also recovered from the staircase landing.

Through field investigations and police camera footage, officers from the Jurong Police Division established the identity of the teenager and arrested him within three hours. Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager was allegedly involved in other similar cases of harassment by moneylenders across the island.

The teenager will be charged in court on June 4, 2024. For first-time offenders, the offense of harassing lenders is punishable by a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000 with a penalty mandatory imprisonment of up to five years and compulsory caning of up to six strokes. .

The police have zero tolerance for harassing activities by lenders. Those who deliberately vandalize properties, cause inconvenience and disrupt public safety, peace and security will be severely punished in accordance with the law.

Members of the public are advised to stay away from lenders and not work with them or assist them in any way. The public can call the police at “999” or the X-Ah Long hotline at 1800-924-5664 if they suspect or know anyone who may be involved in lending activities.
