Teen arrested for alleged robbery faces charges in drive-by shooting

A local teenager arrested Sunday for his alleged involvement in a May 13 robbery and battery now faces an additional felony charge stemming from allegations he shot someone in a drive-by shooting on May 19.

Jared Lloyd Self, 18, who lists an address at Maverick Place, was served with an arrest warrant Tuesday for unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, while he was still in custody since his previous arrest for robbery, punishable by life in prison, first-degree assault and battery, first-degree false imprisonment, theft of property and theft by receiving a weapon fire.

Self, who remains in custody on zero bail, was scheduled to appear Wednesday on all charges against him in Garland County District Court. Although Self indicated no criminal history, he has several prior misdemeanor convictions and was sentenced to 10 days in jail on April 22 for contempt of court and failure to appear stemming from 2023 charges.

According to the probable cause affidavit on the new charge, on May 19, shortly after noon, Hot Springs police responded to the area of School Street and Hobson Avenue regarding shots fired and spoke to a male victim.

The man told officers he was walking on Hobson approaching School Street when a silver Chevrolet extended cab pickup slowed down “right next to him.” He said he was on the phone and when he looked up, he saw a white man he knows as “Jared” holding a rifle on the passenger side of the truck.

The man said he “ran” and heard about eight gunshots, then the truck fled the scene. The man was not injured during the incident.

The man said he knew “Jared” because they were both detained “about a month ago” at the Garland County Detention Center and were staying in the E pod section. While there, he said “Jared” confronted him and accused him of “trying to frame him”, with the argument escalating into a physical fight.

He said he only knew “Jared” by his first name, but he gave police the Facebook account “Jared” used. Detectives contacted detention center staff and located video of the fight between the man and the other inmate, identified as Self.

Video footage was also obtained of a silver or tan Chevrolet truck driving in the area where the shooting occurred, where a white passenger wearing a hoodie could be seen hanging out the passenger window and shooting with an AR type rifle.

The affidavit states that Self “had recent interactions with police while driving and as a passenger in a vehicle matching the description listed” and that the Facebook account provided by the victim was determined to belong to Self.

According to affidavits on previous charges, a local man was attacked and robbed by four suspects in the parking lot of Walmart, 4019 Central Ave., on May 13 after making an appointment via Facebook to meet one of them to sell cell phones.

The victim provided police with the social media account and cell phone number of the person he was meeting, who was allegedly determined to be Self. The victim then picked Self out of a lineup of photos and identified him as one of the four who robbed him. Self was arrested Sunday and allegedly had a stolen handgun in his possession at the time.
