HAMPTON, Va. — A 15-year-old boy has been arrested and charged in connection with a shooting that injured a baby last week, the Hampton Division of Police (HPD) said.

The teen, who has not been identified because of his age, is charged with one count of possession of a firearm by a minor and one count of permitting a minor to access a firearm.

The shooting happened May 28 on Clyde Street. Officers arrived and found a 1-year-old baby. The child was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.

Police previously said another child accidentally shot the victim with an unsecured firearm. Hampton Police Chief Jimmie Wideman told 13News Now on Monday that HPD is still investigating where the gun came from and who was holding the gun when it went off.

“As the investigation identifies who is actually responsible for the child being struck, that is, whoever was in physical possession of the firearm at the time it was discharged, based on the circumstances revealed through the investigation, additional charges may be filed,” Chief Wideman said.

Chief Wideman could not say if the toddler and teen were related. however, he said they lived in the same house. The chief said the 1-year-old toddler is recovering and doing well.

“From what I understand, the baby is in good condition. I mean, no risk of death or other complications related to it,” Chief Wideman said.

Police said last week that everyone involved in the incident had been identified. However, if you have any information that could help detectives, you are asked to call the Crime Line at 1-888-562-5887 or submit a tip online at P3Tips.com.
