Teacher who had sex with vulnerable teenager banned from working with children

A teacher and social worker who had sex with a vulnerable teenager will never be allowed to work with children again. He also forced the victim to send him sexual photos of herself after he took advantage of her.

Ieuan Bartlett, 29, was responsible for supporting children with personal problems as a social worker at the high school where he worked. It would provide individual support to students in a room designed for private and confidential meetings.

The accused began a sexual relationship with the teenager after she relied on his support. He also went to the victim's home while her parents were away and avoided the doorbell camera by walking around the side of the house.

He made the victim believe that he had “fallen in love with her” and that they had a “romantic relationship”. He began grooming her by hugging, touching and kissing her before the abuse became more sexual and the accused had unprotected sex with her. If she told him she didn't want to, he would get angry and “send her away.” He had also harassed her over sexual images of herself which she had sent him despite her reluctance to do so.

The offenses were reported to police after the teenager's mother became aware of text messages between her daughter and Bartlett. The accused initially denied the offenses and the matter went to court, but he later admitted 12 counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust and possession of Indecent images.

Bartlett, of Maes Glas, Whitchurch, was sentenced to 40 months' imprisonment in May this year. He was subject to indefinite sex offender notification requirements and a 15-year restraining order.

The convicted sex offender appeared via video link from HMP Parc at a hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on Friday June 14, where he was told he would be banned for life from teaching, training or any health work with children under 18 years old. The Education Workforce Council and the Disclosure and Barring Service have been informed of his convictions. Judge Lucy Crowther rejected an application to place Bartlett under a sexual harm prevention order.
