TBI investigating officer involved in Johnson City shooting | WJHL

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred at a residence Friday evening in downtown Johnson City.

Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) officers responded to a domestic assault call in the 100 block of W. Chestnut Street, near South Roan Street, shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday, the TBI said in a statement Press.

The release states that when officers arrived, a man came out of the home with a shotgun. Preliminary reports from the scene indicate an altercation between the man and the officer occurred after the subject fired the firearm.

According to the TBI, the officers returned fire and struck the man. He was then transported to an area hospital for treatment. No police officers were injured during the altercation.

This is an ongoing investigation, according to the TBI. A statement provided by the TBI can be found below:

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading up to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, the findings of the investigation will be shared with the District Attorney General for further review and consideration. The TBI only acts as an investigator in its cases and does not determine whether an officer's actions were justified in these types of cases. This decision rests with the district attorney general who requests the involvement of TBI.
