A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after a man was allegedly stabbed at the University of Sydney, prompting a campus lockdown.

The teenager allegedly stabbed the 22-year-old man in the neck and back at Camperdown University in western Sydney about 8.35am on Tuesday.

He allegedly walked up behind the man and stabbed him from behind near the university's entrance on Parramatta Road.

The man was rushed to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a stable condition.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested by police near the hospital as he boarded a bus on Parramatta Road shortly after the incident.

New South Wales Police said the teenager was assisting their investigations.

“Neither person appears to know each other,” police said in a statement.
